The incident unfolded on Groton Street in Chelmsford, where a 65-year-old Dracut woman was driving to work in Boston. Around 9:10 a.m., her vehicle crashed and tipped over near Ward Way, leaving her trapped inside the overturned car. Dianna Claxton, a witness who happened to be passing by, immediately recognized the gravity of the situation and sprang into action."When I pulled up to the scene, it was just a very scary scene," Claxton recounted. "Right away, I saw the car was tipped over on its side." Claxton's quick thinking and willingness to assist set the stage for a remarkable rescue effort.

Bystanders Attempt to Tip the Vehicle Upright

Claxton reported that at least six people had stopped to help the trapped driver, who was conscious but unable to free herself from the vehicle. The witnesses first tried to tip the Nissan car back upright, but their efforts were unsuccessful.Undeterred, one brave individual took an even more daring approach. "That was very dangerous and scary for that guy who jumped on top of the car that was all smashed up," Claxton said. "He also could have injured himself, so that was very brave and I think they're all heroes."

Using the "jaws of life," the emergency responders were able to extricate the woman from the overturned vehicle."Just the way the car was, it was tipped over onto its driver's side. So, we were trying to help extricate her out," explained Chelmsford Police Officer Aidan Gillis. "The fire department got here, able to use the jaws of life, able to extricate her. She was transported to the hospital."
